Nanoscience-Led Antimicrobial Surface Engineering to Prevent Infections

چکیده
One of the major complications associated with implantation biomedical devices regardless their function is biomaterial-associated infection. Infections are generally initiated by opportunistic bacterial colonization and biofilm development on surface implanted biomaterials, rendering infection impervious to host defenses antimicrobials. Moreover, around soft tissues also has a significant role in infections. It well-documented that nature an implant influenced design composition biomaterial, environment, clinical procedure, patient hygiene. Herein, we explore adhesion mechanisms bacteria biomaterials review systematic antimicrobial strategies reduce contamination underlying using Staphylococcus aureus as model pathogen. Also, discuss preventive therapeutic explain future perspectives for nanoscience-based engineering surfaces, including nanostructure surface, microbe–surface interactions, synthetic nanostructured dynamic surfaces antifouling agents, coated properties (polymer coating, release active coating).

متن کاملEvaluating the benefits of antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent urinary tract infections in children: a systematic review.
BACKGROUND The recurrence rate for urinary tract infections in children is estimated at between 30% and 40%. The use of low doses of antibiotics as prophylaxis for recurrent urinary tract infections is common clinical practice. However, prolonged antimicrobial therapy has the potential to contribute to problems of bacterial resistance and antimicrobial side effects. The aim of this review was t...
متن کاملUsing PHMB antimicrobial to prevent wound infection
It has been estimated that 15% of patients who have elective surgery and 30% of patients whose surgery was classed as ‘contaminated’ suffer from surgical site infections (SSIs) (Bruce et al, 2001). Patients with SSIs will have extended hospital stays, they will have a greater risk of morbidity and mortality, and treatment costs will be increased (Kirkland et al, 1999). Wound management programm...
متن کاملEvolving strategies to prevent implant-associated infections.
The consequences of implantassociated infection are significant and usually require revision surgery, with removal of the implant and prolonged antibiotic treatment. Various approaches to reduce the rate of infection have been investigated. Two recent strategies are (1) coating implants with antibiotics and (2) covalently attaching antimicrobial molecules onto the implant surface. The purpose o...
متن کاملA Review of Designing New Vaccines to Prevent Hospital-Acquired Antibiotic-Resistant Infections
Hospital-acquired infections are one of the main challenges and concerns of patients and medical staff in hospitals and healthcare centers. Meanwhile, Clostridium difficile infection is one of the most important bacterial hospital infections. Prevention is the best and most effective way to deal with these infections. Designing and using vaccines against these infectious microorganisms is the b...
